ANOREXIA: LAUREN BAILEY BATTLES BACK FROM THE BRINK TO RECOVERY

Lauren's weight plunged to less than four stone in 2006 - she says problems stemmed from the early onset of puberty which led to bullying because of her size

"An anorexic woman who dropped to three-and-a-half stone* (49 pounds) after walking up to 12 hours a day has battled back to health. (Note: 1 stone = 14 pounds)

Lauren Bailey's condition sent her weight plummeting to that of an average five-year-old and nearly killed her.

The 26-year-old, who would obsessively pace the streets from 6 am to 6 pm, spent 18 months in hospital in a last-ditch bid to overcome her anorexia.

It has taken her more than a decade to overcome, and now the articulate young woman is speaking out about her ordeal to prove to others that they can battle back from the brink.

She said: "I have always suffered from anxiety, depression and obsessive compulsive disorder since I was a child.

"What triggered my anorexia was a combination of things. I was going through puberty at nine years old, which was very early then, and I was the only one - because of that I was bigger than the others.

"I was bullied because I was different - I was into rock music and playing my guitar.

"When it developed into anorexia, it was after someone told me I should go on a diet - at the time I was 14 and it is very young to be thinking about those things.

She spent 18 months in hospital to overcome her illness. The breakthrough came when she was allowed to dig her own grave

"It was then that my obsession with exercise started."

Lauren began walking 12 hours a day, and when she was at home she would pace around her room. Even when not walking, she would set up puzzles on her ironing board so she could remain standing up.

She said: "I was walking the streets from 6 am in the morning to 6 pm at night, or going up and down any stairs I could find.

"I really don't know how I did it, I shouldn't have been able to walk that far. It was the anorexic adrenaline."

Lauren only realised she was anorexic after reading a magazine article by a husband speaking about his wife's battle with her illness.

She said: "I thought, 'Oh my god, that's me - I do all of those things'.

"I always thought everyone else had the problem and I was doing the right thing. Everyone is obsessed with celebrities and diets and I thought everyone wanted to be like that. I was just the same."

Lauren says she wants to help girls beat anorexia and get on with their lives

"It got out of control. It wasn't about wanting to be thin, it was about wanting to disappear."

One of Lauren's worst points was in 2004 when she was 23 and her weight dropped to three stone (42 pounds).

Doctors told her mum Alison Williams, who now works for a mental health charity, they feared her daughter would die.

Lauren said: "I remember being transferred to an eating disorders unit and they didn't think I would make it through the night.

"My mum was so worried about me but until I accepted I had a problem there was nothing anyone else could do."

She managed to put on weight but when out of hospital her old problems returned.

In March 2006 she was again admitted to hospital after her weight plunged to less than four stone where she spent 18 months.

But even while on the wards in Addenbrookes in Cambridge, Lauren still was not ready to accept help and continued to continually pace round and round her room.

After months in the hospital, she finally made a breakthrough.

Lauren said: "They let me dig my own grave and let me get bad again. In the end they sectioned me because I insisted on going on leave when I was too ill to do so and I refused to give up my exercise.

"My mum and my friends were great but everyone else was getting on with their lives outside.

"I got to the point when I thought, 'This isn't getting me anywhere'. I was really miserable and I had no time left in my day because of my obsessions.

"I am a young woman and I was missing out on so much.

"I thought, 'I'm living the same sad life in hospital as I was outside. Life can't be any worse - why don't I just give it a go?'"

Lauren finally left hospital in August 2007 and since then she has been back on track. Although she does not like to talk about her weight, just a glance at her healthy figure shows how far she has come from the skeletal images at the height of her illness.

She also hit out at the glossy magazines sending out "mixed messages" to vulnerable teens.

Lauren said: "It annoys me that these magazines complain about size zero celebrities then the next minute they go on about slimming down for summer. It sends out a mixed message.

"I still have problems but I am enjoying life now.

"I want to give others hope that they can get over anorexia and rebuild their lives."

HEIDI DIAZ FILES CROSS-COMPLAINT IN CIVIL ACTION: NOW ISN'T THAT RICH?

The one and only Heidi Diaz at her deposition in the civil action

In what is perhaps the greatest show of brass cajones in recent memory, Heidi Diaz aka Kimmer, creator of the Kimkins starvation diet, has filed a Cross-Complaint for Damages for the following:

1. Interference with Contract
2. Interference with Economic Advantage
3. Slander/Libel
4. Invasion of Privacy
5. Civil Conspiracy; and last but not least...
6. Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress.

Oh, this is rich. Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress? Seriously, Heidi, you've got to be kidding.

Here is a screenshot of page 16, paragraph 63, citing the distress Heidi alleges she has suffered:

Heidi, I'll tell you what's "despicable, outrageous, intentional and malicious and done with reckless disregard of the fact that such acts would certainly cause...severe emotional and physical distress": YOUR PERPETUATION OF THE DEADLY KIMKINS STARVATION DIET ON WOMEN DESPERATE TO LOSE WEIGHT.

Paragraphs 64, 65 and 66 in your Cross-Complaint are so laughable they're not worthy of comment.

You want to talk about physical illness and emotional distress? Talk to some of the ex-Kimkins members whose lives have been deleteriously and irretrievably changed as a result of following your deadly diet.

Why don't you take a trip down memory lane by clicking on the link below? There you can read the stories of the many women whose lives you played with in a despicable, outrageous, intentional and malicious manner with a reckless disregard that such acts would certainly cause each and every one of them severe emotional and physical distress. Read about how their hair fell out, how they suffered from heart arrhythmia, esophaegeal spasms, eating disorders, and many other physical and emotional problems.

Kimkins Survivors

Your spurious Cross-Complaint is without merit and reeks of a desperate attempt to intimidate. Trust me on this...it's had the opposite effect. The forces are galvanizing.

You, Heidi Diaz, are the author of your own misfortune. You've made your bed...now lie in it.

THE DEADLY KIMKINS DIET: STARVATION IS NOT PRETTY...

Jan

This poor woman looks like death warmed over. "Jan" is the latest Kimkins diet "success story." Jan is on her way to an early death.

Note she has lost most of her hair, her skin is sallow, and her face is becoming skeletal.

It's beyond comprehension that people continue to follow the Kimkins starvation diet, ignoring all the evidence that the diet's founder, Heidi Diaz aka Kimmer, is a morbidly-obese admitted fraud and liar, who is being sued in civil court by former Kimkins members. And word is Federal charges are pending against her.

Heidi Diaz/Kimmer caught on film by the PI, Robert Charlton, evidencing she was not the svelte woman she was purporting to be on her website

Heidi Diaz at her Court deposition

The many faces of Heidi Diaz / Kimmer

The picture on the left is Heidi Diaz...the other pictures are fake "after" pictures she used on her Kimkins website to show her incredible weight loss...incredible, all right.

NICE INVITATION, NICOLE...REAL NICE

Nicole Richie, May 2007

To celebrate Memorial Day last year, Nicole Richie decided to throw a party. Unfortunately, she had no idea what Memorial Day was but thought she'd celebrate it the way most proud Americans celebrate the day.....by asking her friends to wear their sluttiest tops & tightest jeans, to drink till they pass out & wake up with their pants ripped open. Nice, real nice.

The Thinvitation

"There will be a scale at the front door. No girls over 100 pounds allowed in. Start starving yourself now."

Now, how freakin' sad is that?

Wonder if Nicole knew she was pregnant at the time of her party? Hopefully, the "massive amounts of beer" she swilled won't cause Baby Harlow Winter Kate Madden (say what?) some troubles down the road.

Sounds like Mischa Barton had a really swell time. She must have weighed in under the 100-pound limit. After mixing up a dandy cocktail of drugs and booze, Mischa ended up rolling around on the ground like a stuck pig and wailing like a banshee that she was dying. Her Academy-award-winning performance caused her to be rushed to Sherman Oaks Hospital STAT.

Nicole & Mischa...stocking up for the party?

So sorry I wasn't able to make the party, Nicole, though there would have been a snowball's chance in hell of me getting past that scale of yours at the front door.

Check out this great take on the party here:

TERRI SCHIAVO: BULIMIA & ITS DEADLY CONSEQUENCES...

Terri Schiavo (1963 - 2005)

Yes, this poster is shocking. Is it in bad taste? Perhaps. Is the message true? Absolutely.

The case of Terri Schiavo garnered international attention. Many who followed the legal battles swirling around the case regarding the removal of Terri's feeding tube were unaware that Terri had struggled with her weight and suffered from bulimia for years. In fact, the consequences of bulimia are what put her in her vegetative state.

As a child, Terri was chubby. She lost 65 pounds on a diet as a young woman but found it difficult to keep off. It was then she became bulimic, attempting to survive on liquids.

"She [Terri Schiavo] would drink between 15-20 glasses of iced tea each day and may have been purging additionally. Before she was 18, she weighed 250 pounds, and then, with her loving mother, decided to lose weight. She did - and went down to about 150, at which time she met Michael [Terri's husband]. She continued to lose weight aggressively, and got down to 110 before she had her accident. At the hospital, her electrolyte imbalance was profound, causing the cardiac arrest. That imbalance could have been caused by the extreme amount of fluid intake. Now, she weighs about 150."
~ Dr. Jay Wolfson

Terri in 1990 after her cardiac arrest

On February 25, 1990, at the age of 27, Terri's bulimia produced a potassium imbalance causing cardiac arrest, which in turn shut off blood flow to her brain. As a result, most of her brain died, subsequently filling her cranium with spinal fluid, not brain matter.

The dark butterfly area in the centre of the photo on the left shows Terri Schiavo's cerebral cortex has been replaced by spinal fluid.

Electrolyte imbalance among bulimics is a common occurrence, and can be deadly. As well, gastric rupture often occurs in bulimics. A case in point is the young girl in this post here:

BULIMIA KILLS.....WARNING! GRAPHIC PICTURES

In perhaps what is the greatest irony of all, Terri was starving herself to death prior to her cardiac arrest. And in the end, it was the State of Florida who ordered the removal of her feeding tube on March 18, 2005 causing her death by starvation on March 31, 2005.

The autopsy on Terri revealed that her brain damage was even worse than experts had expected. Her brain "weighed about half what a healthy human brain weighs, damage that left her unable to think, feel, see, or interact in any way with her environment. There was no chance she could have recovered..."

May she rest in peace.

PRO ANA / MIA: "NOTHING TASTES AS GOOD AS THIN FEELS"

I stumbled upon the following on a pro-ana site last night. It's the stuff of nightmares.

"01. You will be FAT if you eat today, just put it off one more day.

02. You don't NEED food.

03. Fat people can't fit everywhere.

04. Guys will be able to pick you up without struggling.

05. You'll be able to run faster without all that extra weight holding you back.

06. People will remember you as "the beautiful thin one".

07. If someone has to describe you, they'll say "oh she weighs like 90, 100 lbs".

08. Guys will want to get to know you, not laugh at you and walk away.

09. Starving is an example of excellent willpower.

10. You will be able to see your beautiful, beautiful bones.

11. Bones are clean and pure. Fat is dirty and hangs on your bones like a parasite.

12. If you eat then you'll look like those disgusting, fat, ghetto and trailer-trash hookers on Jerry Springer.

13. The models that everyone claims are beautiful, the spitting image of perfection, are any of them fat? NO!

14. Too many people in the world are obese.

15. People who eat are selfish and unrealistic.

16. Only fat people are attracted to fat people. Do you want pigs to like you because you are one of them.

17. Anyone can have "inner beauty" but few can earn real beauty, inside as well as out.

18. You'll be able to move as quietly and skillfully as a spider.

19. Only thin people are graceful.

20. If you slap a fat person you can see a shockwave ripple over their skin. That's disgusting.

21. Do you want people to say "for gods sake get off me you're crushing me!!!" or "you are sooo light" ???

22. Underweight aka perfect body.

23. Ballerina? or beanbag?

24. I want to be light enough so a helium balloon could lift me and carry me to the clouds.

25. I want to walk in the snow and leave no footprints.

26. Starve off the parts you don't need. They're ugly and they drag you down.

27. Nothing cant be fixed with hunger and weight loss.

28. Saying "no thanks" to food is saying "yes please" to THIN!!!

29. Fat people are so huge, yet people look away from them as if they don't exist.

30. The only time people do notice a fat person is when they get in the way of that beautiful thin girl walking by (ok that sounds really horrible i know.)

31. Have you ever seen a person NOT notice a walking skeleton.

32. Nothing tastes as good as thin feels.

33. Is food more important that happiness in life? I think not!

34. Eating is conforming to everyone else's expectations.

35. When you start to get dizzy and weak you're almost there.

36. Hunger is your friend and it won't betray you like food.

37. Food is mean and sneaky. It tricks you into eating it and it works on you from the inside out making you fat, bloated, ugly and unhappy.

38. Think of anorexia as your secret weapon.

39. If you can name one reason to be fat, I'll name a million and one to be thin.

40. Thin people look good in ANY kind of clothes.

41. Food rots your teeth.

42. Puffy cheeks, double chins and thick ankles-- aren't attractive.

43. Fatty areas stretch and sag as you get older.

44. Ever seen the arms of a fat person wave hello or goodbye?

45. Eating little to nothing saves you money!

46. The average (middle class) American wastes OVER $8,000 a year on FOOD ALONE...it goes in one end and out the other. That sure is a lot of fat! No wonder so many Americans are obese and overweight!

47. Fat people make their country look bad.

48. Big people sweat more and they smell bad.

49. Fat people die earlier.

50. You'll be the envy of all the other girls.

51. All of the guys will want you.

52. You're less likely to get food poisoning.

53. You won't be exposed to all the chemicals and pesticides they put in food today.

54. You won't get sweaty on hot days.

55. The word fat will only apply to you in a sarcastic way.

56. No one wants to see a fat person dance.

57. Beauty Queen? or Dairy Queen?"

BULIMIA KILLS.....WARNING! GRAPHIC PICTURES

Death due to neurogenic shock following gastric rupture in an anorexia nervosa patient*

"Take notice of her position, the discoloring of her limbs and her stomach.

She was 19 and had anorexia and bulimia for 5 years.

Died at 5' 1" (155cm) and 94 lbs (43kg) after her stomach ripped after eating 5.6 liters (pic of stomach contents) of food.

Case notes:

She was in full rigor mortis - which is present from 12-72 hours. The bruises set the time frame at around 8+ hours.

Her eyes had clouded, which happens at progressively from about 2 -4 hours on.

If you look really closely at her stomach, you can see a greenish tint, which is a typical sign of her internal organs decaying - called livor mortis. I think this process may have been accelerated as her insides were digested since it normally takes a few days to set in.

The bruises called for the autopsy. Because of her position when her stomach exploded, it spilled all its contents into her body cavity. The blood and food settled around her anus and vagina and caused what looked like "fresh bruises." So to rule out sexual [assault, etc.], they had to autopsy.

When they did the autopsy, they found that her stomach had been extended from where your ribs meet each other all the way to her pubic bone, right behind that pad of fat above the genitals (mons pubis). And her stomach had a large rip in it...

She also had some other abnormalities going on. Her heart was small and displayed typical characteristics of a starving heart - destroyed muscles and dead immune cells (lipofuscin bodies).

Her brain had swelled, my guess due to the massive increase in blood flow after her stomach ruptured - it had started to squeeze out her skull before she died.

She also had evidence of focal pneumonia in her lungs - not really surprising as starvation hurts the immune response to viruses.

Like a typical binger, her stomach was dying before it ripped. What I mean is that every time we binge our stomachs expand, if they expand far enough, the vessels supplying them blood are crushed - cutting off the blood supply to that area, killing the tissue. That area is weakened and the next binge of that caliber becomes more dangerous. Purging just adds fuel to the fire by increasing stomach pressure above and beyond the natural level.

But believe it or not the ruptured stomach didn't kill her. A natural reaction did.

When the stomach exploded, her body responded with a typical immune reaction. It dilated her blood vessels, her blood pressure dropped, she blacked out, and her heart slowed down and stopped. They also did a tox screen and found nothing. Potassium levels are obviously of no use as when you die potassium leaks out of your cells.

"...her stomach ripped after eating 5.6 liters [picture above] of food."

Another things to note about this. Back in the 1800s, they determined that the stomach should only be able to hold 4 liters of stuff (by filling corpses). To surpass this, we have to adapt our stomach sizes - resulting in gastric dilatation.

Ruptures via overfilling the stomach appear along the lesser curvature of the stomach, whereas vomiting induced ruptures normally occur along the greater curvature and fundus (the top of the stomach) - it's unusual that her stomach ripped how it did, right down the front.

Apart from the intellectual value of the report it does illustrate an important point - the endpoint of these diseases is very ugly.

There is no glamour or beauty spending your last living moments over a toilet."

Abstract:

"We report a case of fatal gastric rupture discovered after death, which developed due to a bulimic attack of a 19-year-old woman suffering from anorexia nervosa. An autopsy revealed an acute gastric dilatation and rupture without commonly observed ischemic damage of gastric wall structures. However, it may be difficult to determine the cause of death despite the marked findings. The death as a consequence of neurogenic shock accounts for all the results of gross examination and histologic analysis. This case is the first reported case of fatal gastric rupture of an anorectic patient discovered after death."

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY RANDOM: SPAGHETTI CAT!

"Spaghetti Cat" Mystery Solved

A spokesperson for Fox got back to us about the kitten with spaghetti photo that had a cameo on The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet. The clip made it's way onto The Soup. They thought it was hysterical. We thought it was a mistake.

The spokesperson said,"What you saw was our new bleep photo. When someone says something inappropriate we're going to use something like that. You're going to see a lot more of those in the future."

Bleep photo? The future? That isn't distracting. That isn't trivializing for a news show. They're literally going to have dancing monkeys in lieu of a curse word - a cross word - a word?! The future just got a lot dimmer...and suddenly it looks a lot like LOLcats...

Meanwhile, the "Spaghetti Cat" has taken off — you can order articles of clothing featuring the random image on Cafe Press."

IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO DIED ON SWISSAIR FLIGHT 111

On September 2, 1998, in the dark of night, Swissair Flight 111 crashed into the ocean off Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia, killing all 229 people on board.

Peggy's Cove

The scene was horrendous. Local fishermen, in their small fishing boats, raced to the point of impact to rescue survivors. With flashlights, they scanned the water, and what they saw still haunts them. Both the plane and its crew and passengers had disintegrated, and floating on the surface of the water were body parts and small pieces of the plane. In the end, approximately 2 million pieces of debris were recovered.

The crash and the aftermath...

Part 5

The 10th anniversary of the crash is only a few days away, although for most Nova Scotians, especially the residents of Peggy's Cove and Bayswater, it feels like yesterday.

And the names of the victims will be forever etched in our memories...
