um, sorry to budge in Medusa but you have only recently posted an email from a young girl who is utterly tangled up in her ED and possibly doesn't even understand it completely yet... What I mean is, girls like these will not see those images as shocking, they will only compare themselves to them and figure that if they're not emaciated and half-dead, then they probably aren't 'sick enough' as ridiculous as it sounds, to get any help, even though you don't need to be a complete skeleton to damage your body and suffer from an ED.
Besides, aren't those anorexic fetish porn pics anyway? Having read Bony Pink's post on your site, I can't help but wonder about the circumstances those pictures where taken in, the actual purpose of them and whether or not the women posing for them actually wanted them taken?...
Sorry to whine like this, but I'm not sure if it's such a good idea to post images like these. EDs are not exclusively about weight and it takes a while to get to that stage, and not such a large percentaqe of sufferers will... However a pretty big group of your readers will save those pictures to their 'thinspiration' folders without a second thought.
I agree with 'Aga'. I'm an ED sufferer, and often come to your blog to read others' stories, especially from those who have reocvered or are recovering. Although I don't find these pictures attractive or 'thinspiring', having seen them will now make it very difficult for me to eat over the next few days or so, and will probably affect other sufferers in the same way. Also, as mentioned above, it's saddening to imaging how the women in the pictures feel.
I understand the message you're trying to convey, but it could so easily backfire and trigger unhealthy behaviours. And I know that's not your intention, so please reconsider displaying these photos.
how can anyone think this is beautiful? i can see beauty in a lot, but all i see here is sadness...the issue of ED bleeds so heavily into who we are (WOMEN) in this society. i want all women to be strong, and convey that strength.
V. true, as always.
ReplyDeleteThanks.
