Karl Lagerfield
Karl Lagerfield, Creative Director of Chanel, in 2001

Karl Lagerfield continued to spew more vitriol today on the call for a ban on "size zero" models...

"No one wants to see curvy women. You've got fat mothers with their bags of chips sitting in front of the television and saying thin models are ugly. Fashion is about dreams and illusions."

Karl Lagerfield

How bizarre, especially coming from a man who has forgotten he was once morbidly obese. These days, he looks like he just crawled out of a crypt...

Karl Lagerfield

Lagerfeld, 2009

Lagerfeld's remarks today were in response to the German magazine, Brigitte, reporting last week that it would no longer feature professional models...that "it would only publish photographs of 'real women' after readers complained they could not identify with the models depicted."

And here are a few more of Lagerfeld's bons mots from January, 2009:

Karl Lagerfield Lagerfeld, 2009

"Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld dismissed "childish" criticism of the fur industry, calling animals "beasts" he has trouble eating meat.

From The Telegraph:

"Hunters in the north "make a living having learnt nothing else than hunting", he said, "killing those beasts who would kill us if they could."

Animals should be killed "nicely" if at all possible, said Lagerfeld, who admitted to being queasy about eating meat.

"I can hardly eat meat because it has to look like something what it was not when it was alive," he said.

Lagerfeld went on to roll his eyes at concerns over eating disorders in the fashion industry.

"In France there are, I think, less than one per cent of people who are too skinny.

"There are nearly 30 per cent of young people who are too fat. So let's take care of the zillions of the too fat before we talk about the percentage that's left."

Two words for you, Karl...ball gag.

I am from Germany and all i can say is your absolutely right.. someone should shove something down his once that he shuts the hell up..i think its great what brigitte does, also i loved Lizzi miller's picture in Glamour..People should realize that what some of us deal with is a disease and that it's not the most desirable thing to look like one of these stick thin models karl seems to adore so much..So Karl here's a message for you: use the damn power that you, for some reason, have and do something good with it and don't animate people like that to ruin there bodies!
All you women out there should be proud of what you got!

This just makes me sick. There's just so many ignorant people out there that don't get it and don't want to get it. He looked a bit overweight in the first photo but healther than he did when he lost more weight. His look changed and appeared he has mental issues with how weird he appeared. Must be the lack of food! idiot. His brain is not functioning right which happens when you deny the body of precious nutrients.
He's basically promoting anorexia because only anorexics could wear the fashion his models are wearing.
Ralph Lauren is another idiot. Did you see the recent photo in the headlines of the model photo shopped to look grotesquely anorexic?
Love your headline Medusa! lol

I agree 100% that Karl should just shut up, or at least describe his views on the "fantasy" of fashion without disparaging the looks or supposed lifestyles of others.

I also think, though, that Karl's looks should be left out of this (regardless of how you find him)...

And incidentally, I do miss seeing those fans. (The Karl-Lagerfeld-fan-thing was part of my favorite bits from Margaret Cho!)

I disagree anonymous about his looks being left out regardless of how I feel. He puts the models "death" looks at hand and therefore the same should be done of him!

Maybe he should just stop talking about other people's weight and eating all together- he obviously must have nothing else better to do. Which is so sad. I pity this man for being so low that he discriminate against others because of their weight. Its none of his business and maybe he needs to go work at Wal-Mart (where he belongs) instead of the fashion industry.

I do agree that he needs to promote healthy eating in his models -- not promote the stick thin anorexic look. However, I do think he has a point -- obesity is a much more widespread problem than anorexia. We should worry about that, too; not just the super skinny models.

Is it an "illusion" that models are dying to fit into the freakishly small clothing that you design Mr. Lagerfield?

Karl's statement are unfortunately rather serious. he is the undisputed emporer of fashion ( now that YSL has gone on). what he does matters.

and he is an extremely gifted speaker. in his rapit fire, non chalant lisp he is quick and smart.

what he does here is mixing seperate issues to make it seem like he has a point on one issue he makes a valid point about another.

of course he is wrong to promote anorexia, he knows this, no fool he, old Kalle from Hamburg, but he also knows his empire needs the illusion.

the issue on fur is an old lagerfeld topic, and what he used to say, is that this is all just blah blah by people who don't know and that all the models who did the ads against fur, kept all their furs, and made them into blankets for home use. funny insightful and perhaps not all wrong.

obesity is MUCH MUCH worse than anorexia, is without question true. its death rate is near 100%, there is no known program or cure that works, its the number one killer in the USA and going to be in lots of other places. yes it kills much slower than anorexia, but "only" 20% of anorexic die, fat people will always die due to their desease.

however, this is entirely beside the point. anorexia is no cure for fat people. and just because one is worse does not mean we should not take the lesser evil seriously. And, of course, for the individual who is anorexic that is the important thing.

Karl doesn't talk about his age, but from the interviews lately (my mom is a HUGE fan) it seems he may be gettin on in years and not quite have the freshness required to change his industry.

in a recent interview he started to speak english to a german tv crew. His english accent is terrible. his german is flawless, as he is German.

but he remain king of his hill, no one in sight to take up such a dominant role, so it is horrible that he goes arrund saying that.

finally: i personally belive the rumour that he was/is using pills to loose the weight. he would be able to get a hold of fenPhen.

the best way to get rid of this man and his irresponsible babbling, is to ignore him and his fashion. just like everyone did with the KL line.

I have never cared about fashion or worn name brand clothes.I'd like to know what fantasy Lagerfield thinks models inspire, because most of the clothes they show are UGLY and no normal person would WANT to wear them.
His comments are just one more reason to boycott the fashion industry.
