IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO DIED ON SWISSAIR FLIGHT 111

On September 2, 1998, in the dark of night, Swissair Flight 111 crashed into the ocean off Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia, killing all 229 people on board.

Peggy's Cove

The scene was horrendous. Local fishermen, in their small fishing boats, raced to the point of impact to rescue survivors. With flashlights, they scanned the water, and what they saw still haunts them. Both the plane and its crew and passengers had disintegrated, and floating on the surface of the water were body parts and small pieces of the plane. In the end, approximately 2 million pieces of debris were recovered.

The crash and the aftermath...

Part 5

The 10th anniversary of the crash is only a few days away, although for most Nova Scotians, especially the residents of Peggy's Cove and Bayswater, it feels like yesterday.

And the names of the victims will be forever etched in our memories...

Thank you for sharing this, Medusa. Remembering the Swissair Flight crash brings to mind memories of a similar crash, closer to home for me.

Eight years ago, I was one of those standing on the beach wondering about the lives of those on board Alaska Airlines Flight 261, and wishing there was something I could do to help. That day led to my ongoing involvement with the American Red Cross Disaster Services.

We have an annual tribute to their memory as well:

Bell rings for 88 crash victims

May they all rest in peace.

Thank you for this interview with Ian Shaw.

For those who missed this story on Flight SR 111 published in Esquire magazine in the year 2000:

(I apologize if this link is already here somewhere on this site.)

My heart goes out to everyone affected by this disaster.
